I have a deep appreciation for visiting historical sites, especially temples and churches. Recently, during a trip to Goa, I had the chance to visit a very ancient temple that had long been on my wish list. Although I am a local Goan, this was my first time exploring this unique and hidden gem. The visit took place during the monsoon season, and the temple, nestled within a lush forest, looked even more captivating surrounded by vibrant greenery. The serene environment added an extra layer of enchantment to the experience.

This temple is relatively unknown due to its remote location; the access route is narrow, and you have to navigate through the forest to reach it. Refreshment options are limited, but during the monsoon, you can enjoy traditional Indian snacks like onion bhajji, batata vada, and tea. If you're planning to visit Goa and are interested in exploring ancient architecture, I highly recommend making time for this place. Now, let's delve into some basic information about the temple.

The Tamdi Surla Temple, also known as the Tambdi Surla Temple, is an ancient Hindu temple located in the Sattari taluka of North Goa, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is renowned for its exquisite Kadamba-Yadava architectural style, which blends elements of both Hindu and Dravidian design. The temple is unique because it is the only surviving example of 12th-century Kadamba architecture in Goa. Built during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty, the temple is constructed from basalt stones, and its intricate carvings and sculptures depict various Hindu deities, mythological scenes, and celestial motifs.

The temple is set amidst lush, green forests, near the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, which adds to its mystique and serene atmosphere. It is situated about 60 km from Panaji, the state capital, and is a popular destination for both devotees and history enthusiasts. The temple’s surroundings, with their natural beauty, enhance the spiritual experience, offering a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of urban life. The architecture, with its finely chiseled stonework, has survived centuries of wear and tear and remains a testament to the craftsmanship of its builders.

Although Tamdi Surla is not as widely known as some of Goa's more famous temples, it draws visitors for its historical significance, natural surroundings, and relatively untouched state. The temple is still actively used for worship, especially during the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, which sees a gathering of devotees to honor Lord Shiva. The preservation of this ancient structure, alongside the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region, makes Tamdi Surla Temple an important site for both spiritual and historical exploration.

Best Time to Visit Tamdi Surla Temple:

1 October to March (Peak Season)

Weather: This is the best time to visit, as the weather is pleasant and conducive for sightseeing and outdoor activities. During these months, the temperatures range between 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), and the humidity is lower compared to the monsoon season.

Festivals: The temple celebrates Shivaratri, which usually falls between February and March, a time when devotees from across the region visit to participate in special prayers and rituals.
